Sarafotoxin
Venom Peptide / VasoconstrictorAlso known as: Sarafotoxin 6c, S6c, SRTX
Snake Venom PeptidesResearch phase: Preclinical (research tool)Regulatory: Not approved. Research tool compound.
Mechanism
Sarafotoxins are venom peptides from the Israeli mole viper that are structurally nearly identical to human endothelin. They cause lethal vasoconstriction in envenomation.
Technical detail
Sarafotoxins are 21-amino acid peptides from Atractaspis engaddensis venom sharing ~60% homology with endothelin-1. They activate endothelin receptors (ETA/ETB) causing potent vasoconstriction, coronary vasospasm, and AV conduction block. Sarafotoxin 6c (S6c) is selective for ETB receptors and is used as a pharmacological tool.
