Protegrin-1

Antimicrobial Peptide

Also known as: PG-1

Porcine Antimicrobial PeptidesResearch phase: Preclinical (parent); Phase 3 failed (iseganan analog)Regulatory: Not approved. Analog iseganan failed Phase 3.

Mechanism

Protegrin-1 is a potent antimicrobial peptide from pig white blood cells with broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses.

Technical detail

Protegrin-1 is an 18-amino acid beta-hairpin peptide from porcine leukocytes with two disulfide bonds. It forms octameric pores in bacterial membranes, killing both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms at low micromolar concentrations. Its synthetic analog iseganan (IB-367) advanced to Phase 3 trials for oral mucositis but failed to meet endpoints.
