Mechanism
Pancreastatin is a fragment of chromogranin A that inhibits insulin secretion and stimulates glycogenolysis. It plays a role in glucose metabolism and is implicated in diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Technical detail
Pancreastatin (PST) is a 52-amino acid peptide derived from chromogranin A processing (CgA 250-301). It inhibits glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from beta cells, stimulates hepatic glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, and inhibits adipocyte lipogenesis. PST levels are elevated in type 2 diabetes. PST knockout mice show improved insulin sensitivity and reduced adiposity. It also has anti-angiogenic properties.
