Omega-Conotoxin GVIA
Venom Peptide / Ion ChannelAlso known as: ω-Conotoxin GVIA, GVIA
ConotoxinsResearch phase: Preclinical (research tool)Regulatory: Not approved as drug. Research tool. Related analog ziconotide is FDA-approved.
Mechanism
Omega-conotoxin GVIA is a peptide from cone snail venom that blocks N-type calcium channels. It is a widely used research tool for studying pain and neurotransmitter release.
Technical detail
ω-Conotoxin GVIA is a 27-amino acid peptide from Conus geographus that selectively and irreversibly blocks N-type voltage-gated calcium channels (Cav2.2). It inhibits neurotransmitter release at presynaptic terminals and served as the pharmacological basis for the development of ziconotide.
