Neuromedin S

Neuromodulation / Circadian

Also known as: NMS

Neuromedin FamilyResearch phase: PreclinicalRegulatory: Not approved. Endogenous neuropeptide.

Mechanism

Neuromedin S is a neuropeptide found in the brain's master clock (suprachiasmatic nucleus) that regulates circadian rhythms and also suppresses appetite.

Technical detail

Neuromedin S is a 36-amino acid peptide that signals through NMUR1 and NMUR2 receptors. It is highly expressed in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and is involved in circadian clock output. NMS also reduces food intake, modulates inflammatory responses, and regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Shares the C-terminal pentapeptide with NMU.
