Elabela

Cardiovascular / Developmental

Also known as: ELA, Toddler, Apela

Apelin/APJ SystemResearch phase: PreclinicalRegulatory: Not approved. Research peptide. Discovered 2013.

Mechanism

Elabela is a recently discovered hormone that activates the apelin receptor (APJ) and is essential for heart development. It is being studied for its cardioprotective and kidney-protective effects.

Technical detail

Elabela is a 32-amino acid peptide (also active as ELA-11) that acts as an endogenous ligand for the APJ receptor (APLNR), alongside apelin. It is essential for cardiac morphogenesis and vasculogenesis; APELA knockout is embryonic lethal. In adults, ELA promotes angiogenesis, diuresis, and cardioprotection. It also has anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory effects in kidney and heart disease models.
