Beta-Casomorphin-7

Opioid / Food-Derived

Also known as: β-Casomorphin-7, BCM-7, Beta Casomorphin 7

Food-Derived Opioid PeptidesResearch phase: PreclinicalRegulatory: Not approved. Food-derived bioactive peptide. Subject of ongoing debate.

Mechanism

Beta-casomorphin-7 is a mild opioid peptide released during digestion of A1 cow's milk protein (casein). It has been controversially linked to digestive discomfort and other effects.

Technical detail

Beta-casomorphin-7 (Tyr-Pro-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro-Ile) is a heptapeptide derived from enzymatic digestion of A1 beta-casein. It is a weak mu-opioid receptor agonist that may slow GI transit and modulate immune function. Its clinical significance in conditions like autism and cardiovascular disease remains controversial and unproven.
