Apamin

Venom Peptide / Ion Channel

Also known as: Apamine

Bee Venom PeptidesResearch phase: Preclinical (research tool)Regulatory: Not approved. Research tool compound.

Mechanism

Apamin is a component of bee venom that selectively blocks small-conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK) channels. It is widely used in neuroscience research.

Technical detail

Apamin is an 18-amino acid neurotoxic peptide from Apis mellifera venom with two disulfide bonds. It is the only known selective blocker of SK channels (KCa2.1-2.3), making it indispensable for studying afterhyperpolarization currents and neuronal excitability.
