Anserine

Nutraceutical / Antioxidant

Also known as: Beta-Alanyl-1-Methylhistidine, β-Alanyl-N(π)-Methylhistidine

Histidine-Containing DipeptidesResearch phase: Dietary supplement; some clinical dataRegulatory: Not approved as drug. Available as dietary supplement.

Mechanism

Anserine is a dipeptide related to carnosine, found in bird and fish muscle. It has antioxidant and anti-glycation properties with some evidence for uric acid reduction.

Technical detail

Anserine (β-alanyl-1-methylhistidine) is a methylated analog of carnosine abundant in avian and fish skeletal muscle. It scavenges reactive oxygen species and reactive carbonyl species, inhibits protein glycation, and has pH-buffering capacity. Clinical studies in Japan demonstrated uric acid-lowering effects in hyperuricemic subjects.
