Angiotensin IV
Cardiovascular / CognitiveAlso known as: Ang IV, Angiotensin(3-8), Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe
Renin-Angiotensin SystemResearch phase: PreclinicalRegulatory: Not approved as drug. Endogenous RAS peptide. Research interest for cognition.
Mechanism
Angiotensin IV is a fragment of angiotensin that enhances memory and learning by binding the AT4 receptor (IRAP). It has sparked interest in cognitive enhancement research.
Technical detail
Angiotensin IV [Ang(3-8)] is a hexapeptide binding the AT4 receptor, identified as insulin-regulated aminopeptidase (IRAP/LNPEP). AT4 activation enhances hippocampal long-term potentiation and memory consolidation. Proposed mechanisms include inhibition of IRAP-mediated oxytocin/vasopressin degradation and modulation of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) signaling. Dihexa was developed as a metabolically stable AT4 agonist.
