Alpha-Endorphin

Opioid / Neuromodulation

Also known as: α-Endorphin, Alpha Endorphin

Endogenous Opioid PeptidesResearch phase: PreclinicalRegulatory: Not approved. Endogenous peptide used in research only.

Mechanism

Alpha-endorphin is a short fragment of beta-endorphin produced from the POMC precursor protein. It has mild analgesic and neuromodulatory effects.

Technical detail

Alpha-endorphin is a 16-amino acid fragment (β-endorphin 1-16) derived from POMC processing. It exhibits weaker mu-opioid receptor affinity than full-length β-endorphin and has been studied for neuromodulatory roles including effects on adaptive behavior and dopaminergic tone.
